About Us
|
Cone of Confusion started in 2016 as an experimental project, which brings together musical elements of funk, jazz, psychedelic rock, and electronic. It is almost completely instrumental and contains significant improvised parts that are played on vibraphone, tenor sax / clarinet, synths, guitar, bass, and drums.
In June 2018, we recorded live our first album at 301 Studios in Sydney, co-produced by Jack Garzonio, and mastered by Steve Smart. The album includes eight tracks (48 minutes). Our first single from the album, Conscious Inertia, was self-released last March. We are now planning to launch the full album in October at 505 in Sydney, and accompany it with several more shows that will follow. |
What We Bring
|
We bring original music for real music lovers. Whenever we play live, a common reaction from people who hear us first time is how surprised they are to hear quality music with our particular instrumentation.

Jay Woo has been playing the electric bass in numerous groups in Sydney since
he moved to Australia from South Korea. Jay also experimented significantly with rock, punk, and reggae music, but found a strong urge to leave these behind in favor of jazzy and experimental stuff ever since he started listening to the likes of Sun Ra and Don Cherry. Adam Weisser started playing piano in his teens in Israel, and was always drawn to improvised music. As he added more keyboard instruments to his arsenal - vibraphone, harmonium, and synths - he also experimented heavily in home production, mainly inspired by soulful electronic music and jazz, but never fitting comfortably in either genre. Rémi Marchand, from France, is a sworn blues guitarist, but his real passion is progressive rock. His work with Cone of Confusion is somewhere in between, providing the harmonic backbone and the psychedelic touch, due to his imaginative use of effects and playing styles. Carlos Negrete is a self-taught drummer, originally from Mexico, with roots in punk rock and blues. As the Cone of Confusion tracks tend to have odd meters, Carlos's organic drumming and sensitive musical touch were indispensable in the development of their unique sound. Gareth Hearne, originally from Perth, is a proficient, classically trained clarinet player who has recently picked up the tenor sax as well. He has been experimenting with an extremely diverse range of styles and ever since moving to Sydney in 2016 has been in high demand in local jazz, fusion, experimental, microtonal, hip hop, choral and vocal harmony ensemble. |

"The entrancing sound of Conscious Inertia encapsulates progressive rock at its finest; tight and psychedelic, with a heavy dose of jazz. There is some dazzling musicianship at work here ... more" Luke Saunders, Happy Mag |
