Pairing introspective lyrics with layered Sonic Textures, Madi Leeds offers a compelling take on the Indie-Pop genre.
A seasoned performer at a young age, Madi Leeds is proving to be an artist with an eclectic sound palate that seems to be ever growing. With an array of apparent influences, Madi demonstrates a vocal style similar to that of artists such as HAIM and St. Vincent. An understated yet commanding presence within her tracks, the vocals that Madi presents to her audience display an incredible technical control and knack for personable storytelling. Partnered with glistening synth lines and the rhythmic styles found in Indie Rock, Madi is carving out her own sonic niche within the ever-busy Melbourne Music Scene. That particular niche could be described as Retro Futurism. A term that signifies a sense of duality. The familiarity of our past mixed the excitement and uncertainty and abstract nature of the future. Enamoured with Popular Culture of the 90’s and 2000’s, Madi’s affinity for Disney Musicals, Pop Rock (Hilary Duff, The Veronicas) and animation of that era is all present within not only Madi’s personality but the very image that she cultivates. This nostalgic filter can be heard in the instrument specific portions of Tracks such as Spinelli and brand-new Single Identity. There is a comfort in the warmness of Madi’s voice, a presence that suggests nostalgia as it is accompanied by a wave of electronics, wrapping around you like a blanket. However, through extremely personal and anecdotal lyrics, Madi challenges listeners to step into her own world. A world of colour, energy, a hint of sarcasm and imagination. |
